Organic Paper-making

Aswan
The art of papyrus-making dates back to the third millennium B.C. in Egypt, where the aquatic papyrus plant was used to make writing material. By cutting the sticky fibrous pith of the papyrus plant into thin strips and then placing two layers of these at right angles to each other, the papyrus was stuck together using pressure and then smoothed by pounding it with a wooden mallet.
Inez Fritschy’s workshop incorporates demonstrations and practice, which will help to familiarize the participants with various methods and techniques for making papyrus-like paper art pieces. Participants will make beautiful thin layers of paper from leeks, radishes and other fruits and vegetables. These will be layered together with other paper objects, such as Chinese paper money, Korean and Japanese papers, tracing paper and grease paper. Additionally gold leaf, bronze dust, India ink and artist paints will be used to complete the pieces.
